Marriott International has turned to artificial intelligence to modernize its HR operations and, more importantly, to address one of the biggest challenges in hospitality, which is recruiting and holding on to talent in the present-day labor market. Fortune says that the company began implementing AI tools in 2022 as part of a broader effort to recover from widespread labor shortages that affected hotels globally.

The evolution started with Marriott’s decision to consolidate workforce data from multiple applicant tracking systems into a single, standardized platform. Engineering this unified dataset allowed the company’s AI models to make accurate and instant recommendations when matching candidates to positions. As reported by HR Executive, the new system can instantly analyze experience, geographic location, and availability to present their recruiters with the best applicants. This reduced the hiring cycle by more than 30% in many introductory markets.
In addition to this, Marriott also utilized AI to improve retention. Predictive analytics tools call out properties that are at risk of high turnover, helping HR leaders intervene early through training programs, mentorship, or targeted benefits adjustments.

The company’s approach underscores a key principle that applies across all industries: AI is only as effective as the data behind it. By cleaning, integrating, and standardizing its HR information first, Marriott ensured that its AI systems deliver accurate, and usable insights.
