GenAI - AgAI - LLMs…… What These Really Mean
These three terms dominate today’s artificial intelligence lexicon. But what do they actually mean?
In this short article we will focus on Generative AI, and we will cover the others in separate pieces throughout the week so anyone can understand what they are, and why they matter.
Let’s start with Generative AI…. What is it?
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that learns from huge amounts of information, and uses patterns from that data to create something new. As in, it generates something. Rather than simply retrieving facts, it can organize text, summarize ideas, help people think through problems, and even design images. You can think of it as a highly skilled digital assistant that understands context, creates new content, and works with you in real time.
GenAI can:
• write emails, essays, or reports
• produce realistic images
• draft code
• summarize long documents
• generate business ideas or strategies
GenAI cannot:
• know real-time or private information
• guarantee factual accuracy
• understand emotions or meaning the way humans do
• make decisions for you
• act in the physical world (Self-driving cars would be an example of something that can do this )
Its strength is creation rather than prediction. In practice it feels less like a tool and more like a collaborator. You give it instructions and it produces original content in seconds. Generative AI helps you work faster, think bigger, and turn ideas into something real without needing deep technical knowledge.
